Braces-Friendly Food Ideas

, ,

Hello everyone, I hope you’re having a lovely morning/afternoon/evening! I recently got braces, and due to my pickiness and unstoppable planning behavior, I created my own simple food/meal ideas. Yeah, I know, what am I? A fitness guru now? Absolutely not. I’m just merely a complicated human being who loves food and planning. Anyway, I decided to share the little food plans I created with you because a) this is the Callie Blog, so you learn Callie Things, and b) just in case any of you out there have braces or are getting braces, this might help you out!

“Main Courses”

Blueberry Pancakes

I used the original recipe from allrecipes.com only I added blueberries. Pro tip: make sure you mash the blueberries prior to adding them to the mix! I didn’t mash them beforehand and it was a lot harder to try and flip them. Also, I used a 1/8C measuring cup to pour out the batter for mini pancakes

Mini Pancakes

I originally found this recipe on allrecipes.com, but in order to make the pancakes ‘mini,’ I poured out the batter using a 1/8C measuring cup.

Apple Muffins

This recipe came from bakedbyanintrovert.com using her basic muffin recipe. However, toward the bottom of her recipe, she had some adjustments where you could create muffins with other flavors such as apple. Also, instead of using butter, I used about 1/3C of olive oil to give the muffins a softer texture when hot (easier for a sore mouth to eat).

Blueberry Muffins

This recipe was also found at bakedbyanintrovert.com in the same area as the apple muffin recipe. Again, I used about 1/3C of olive oil rather than butter to make eating a little easier for my sore teeth.

Chia Seed Pudding w/ Raspberries

This recipe is originally from morganelizabethhealth.com. In her original recipe she used a mason jar to store her pudding in the fridge, but I found that I regular tupperware container worked perfectly fine. A little trick I learned from elephantasticvegan.com is you can use 3T of chia seeds for 1C of milk you use!

Scrambled Eggs

This is one of simpler, more well-known recipes out there. All you have to do is get a slab of butter, melt/spread it over a pan on medium heat, crack your eggs, and move them around until they cook enough. When my eggs are done and on my plate, I like to sprinkle some salt to add some extra flavor.

Sides

Yogurt

Yogurt is one of the easiest, tastiest, and smoothest foods out there. I may be a little obsessed with it. Now, you can always get ‘pre-flavored’ yogurt such as strawberry banana or blueberry, but if you want to go a healther route, you can always get plain Greek yogurt and add some fresh fruits to it! (diced or sliced, of course)

Honey Oatmeal

I am a very plain gal. I will eat hot water, oats, and honey together and be satisfied. However, if you would like a bit more flavor in oatmeal, you can experiment with maple syrup, brown sugar, frozen fruit, and/or nuts!

Applesauce

Applesauce can be found at any of your local grocery stores. Not only is applesauce easy to find, but it’s also one of the top recommendations that I’ve received some friends who have/had braces. Not to mention all you have to do is simply pour the applesauce into a bowl; no cooking, baking or prep required!

Banana and Honey in Milk

This recipe is a little modified version of something my siblings and I would have when we were younger: bananas and milk. In the original recipe, we would simply have banana slices, sugar, and milk, but if you’re watching your sugar or simpply want a bit more taste, honey is the perfect substitute for sugar.

Mashed Potatoes

Who says mashed potatoes are only for Thanksgiving? Not me, that’s for sure. I had mashed potatoes all the time when recovering from my wisdom teeth removal so this snack is tried, tested and triumphant! If you do become bored of the plain, potato taste, you can always add gravy, chives, cream cheese and herbs like parsley, thyme, and rosemary.

Milkshakes

Apple & Cinnamon

I love anything apple-flavored. Apple-flavored treats remind me of Autumn; my favorite season, so why not make a yummy milkshake to a) quench your hunger/thirst and b) remind you of a lovely time of year?

Banana & Cinnamon

Now, this recipe caught me off-guard for a moment. I originally found this recipe via unicornsinthekitchen.com but edited it a bit. In my household, we’re not allowed to have ice cream willy-nilly so instead of the vanilla ice cream, I used 2t of vanilla extract to still have a vanilla flavoring.

Spinach & Banana

I know what some may be thinking: ‘ew spinach.’ But, personally, the spinach has barely any taste in this milkshake! Therefore, you can still get the nutrients and healthy ・゚: *stuff*:・゚ from fresh spinach without even having to taste it! Tip: if you don’t have any fresh strawberries, feel free to use 1T strawberry jelly/jam; I’ve found that it still adds a nice, strawberry flavor!

Raspberry & Honey

I love raspberries and I love honey. End of story. I found this recipe at blendtec.com, but, due to large-household-ice-cream-regulations, I cut out the vanilla ice cream. Now, if you would really like that extra vanilla flavor, you could add 2t of vanilla extract.

Oatmeal & Banana

I believe I created this recipe from my own little head… Nonetheless, I simply wanted a way to add a little ・゚: *spice*:・゚ to a banana milkshake. The oats add a nice texture to the milkshake, but also allow you to check off ‘grains’ on your daily food pyramid!

Mini-Meals!

Just some quick, mini-meals for those who need ideas on what to pack for school lunch or simply want to get in some meal prep/planning!

1 || chia seed pudding with raspberries / scrambled eggs / spinach & banana milkshake

2 || mini-pancakes / mashed potatoes / apple & cinnamon milkshake

3 || blueberry muffins / scrambled eggs / oatmeal & banana milkshake

I hope you enjoyed this quick little run-down of various food ideas! I did my best to try and incorporate something from each food group into every mini-meal. If you have any suggestions, share your thoughts down below in the comments! There can never be enough help! To those with braces, I wish you less pain and struggling, and know that I am, currently, feeling your pain as well… it’s alright, though; we’ll persevere!! Anyway, throughout the aches and pains of braces, remember: keep inspiring folks and loving yourself!
