Ways to Worship in Every Day Life // Wednesday Whatevers

, , ,

Hello everyone, I hope you’re having a lovely morning, afternoon, or evening! I always thought that worshipping God was restricted to church services or morning devotions, but that’s not true. Just simply living and breathing can be an act of worship. So, in this post, I’ve got some ideas for how you can worship in your everyday life and practice the presence of God. Enjoy!

>> A Quote <<

This is from a post that a friend shared on Facebook, and I think it’s very fitting to the topic of this post!
psst… you can view the original post here!

“There was a moment when Moses had the nerve to ask God what his name is. God was gracious enough to answer, and the name he gave is recorded in the original Hebrew as YHWH.
Over time we’ve arbitrarily added an “a” and an “e” in there to get YaHWeH, presumably because we have a preference for vowels.
But scholars and Rabbi’s have noted that the letters YHWH represent breathing sounds or aspirated consonants. When pronounced without intervening vowels, it actually sounds like breathing.
YH (inhale): WH (exhale).
So a baby’s first cry, his first breath, speaks the name of God.
A deep sigh calls His name – or a groan or gasp that is too heavy for mere words.
Even an atheist would speak His name, unaware that their very breath is giving constant acknowledgment to God.
Likewise, a person leaves this earth with their last breath, when God’s name is no longer filling their lungs.
So when I can’t utter anything else, is my cry calling out His name?
Being alive means I speak His name constantly.
So, is it heard the loudest when I’m the quietest?
In sadness, we breathe heavy sighs.
In joy, our lungs feel almost like they will burst.
In fear, we hold our breath and have to be told to breathe slowly to help us calm down.
When we’re about to do something hard, we take a deep breath to find our courage.
When I think about it, breathing is giving him praise. Even in the hardest moments!
This is so beautiful and fills me with emotion every time I grasp the thought. God chose to give himself a name that we can’t help but speak every moment we’re alive.
All of us, always, everywhere.
Waking, sleeping, breathing, with the name of God on our lips.”

1 || Volunteering

This doesn’t necessarily mean going out to a homeless shelter or soup kitchen; you can volunteer in your own house! Does your mom need some help cooking? Does your dad need help fixing something? What about little siblings? I definitely recommend going out to a shelter or kitchen or some place where you can volunteer for strangers who need it, but don’t discount the volunteering you can do within your own household!

2 || Bible Journaling

I suppose this could kind of fall under the umbrella of “devotional time,” or maybe it’s just a hobby you enjoy, but it’s still an act of worship! I view it as a creative and interactive way of Bible study. I usually take notes on a passage (from a sermon, personal time, etc.) then I take the most key parts of it or the pieces that stood out the most to me and I put them into my Bible! I like to use these products:

Zebra Mildliners: I use these for highlighting passages as well as adding color to designs and such

Sakura Micron Pens: I use these for writing, underlining, circling, etc. they have multiple tip sizes which is really convenient!

Crossway ESV Journaling Bible: I received this as a graduation gift and use it as my main Bible!

The Daily Grace Co. ESV Single Column Journaling Bible: I bought this for myself as a “display Bible.” I have yet to actually journal in it, but I like to have it on my trunk, open to a passage to look at as I’m going about my day.

The Daily Grace Co. Sticky Note Set: I mainly use the little semi-circle stickies to bookmark my go-to/favorite passages. I have yet to use the other tabs, however.

Christian Art Gifts Peel and Stick Coloring Bible Index Tabs: I was never good at Bible drills or remembering where books in the Bible are, so these are a life-saver!

psst… you can look at my Bible Journaling Inspiration post to see some of these in action!

3 || Send A Letter/Text/Etc To A Friend or Family Member

Whether it’s just a text to check how they’ve been, or even a funny picture or social media post, being a light and joy to your loved ones is a wonderful way to worship God, care for others, and maybe even bring a smile to your own face. Choose even just one person in your life to contact today or tomorrow!

4 || Random Act of Kindness

You can do this literally wherever you are. At school, work, home, or walking down the street. Just yesterday (according to when I’m writing this post) I gave money to a homeless man that I happened upon, let a woman in front of me know her shoe was untied, and complimented the dress of another woman. You never know how much that can brighten a person’s day and, again, maybe even bring a smile to your own face!

5 || Sing

God gave you a voice, use it! Even if you don’t think it sounds good or you can’t hold a tune, God doesn’t care! Even our most sincere acts of worship are subpar, but He loves when we try and do and commit anyway. Pick your favorite hymn (or hymns) and even just hum or whistle them as you go about your day. God is always listening to His children.

6 || Spend Time In Nature

I love nature; as long as I can remember, I’ve been enraptured by it. I often feel like people, Christian or not, don’t pay as much attention to nature as they should. Now, it is important to worship the Creator not the creation, however. There a few hymns that mention seeing God through His creation, one of my favorites being the second verse of How Great Thou Art, which, unfortunately, is often skipped during worship or recorded versions of the song.

When through the woods and forest glades I wander,
and hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees.
As I look down from lofty mountain grandeur,
I hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze.

I absolutely adore this verse; it draws back to a line in the first verse: “They power throughout the universe displayed.” Spending time in nature and truly sitting back and basking in God’s workmanship is a splended time to worship. I often think about the personalness of God. Like, He knows I love nature, He created me to love nature, and He created this beautiful world for me, knowing that I would love it. Isn’t that just wonderful? I just love this beautiful world and any chance I get to just exist in it.
Not to mention, you could always pray or sing a hymn as you do your thing!

7 || Gratitude Journaling

If you’re familiar with the A.C.T.S. method of praying, you’ll already know the importance of giving thanks. Not only is it just simply right to do, but it can be so so good for you. Now, you can always thank God for things throughout your day, but I think it can be even more effective and deep if you set aside time to dwell on it. At the end of each day, grab a journal (or just your phone) and write down every single thing you’re thankful for from that day. Even the silly, small things. And give them back to God in gratitude.

Fun fact: when I was a camp counselor last summer, I did this exercise with my girls. During devotions each night, I would ask them to say one thing that they were thankful for from that day or something that made them smile or laugh. One night, as we were walking back to our cabins, one of my campers said that she already started thinking about her answer.
It doesn’t take long to make this into a habit!

8 || Hanging Out With Friends and Family

Fellowship is important. Like, really. You don’t even have to be talking about deep theological stuff or singing hymns; just spending time with God’s people, your brothers and sisters, is worship. I think that will be a huge part of Heaven; all of us gathered together.

>> A Book To Read <<

A woman from my church gave this book to me for my birthday last year; it’s called The Practice of the Presence of God. The book is a compilation of teachings by a 17th century friar, Brother Lawrence. It’s main theme is practicing God’s presence in everything you do, and making a habit of conversing with God continually. Now, I’ll be honest, I haven’t read it yet, but it’s up next on my list. It’s rather short, so it’s an easy read, too!

There you go! I hope you found this post helpful and/or inspiring. If you have any other ideas that you’d like to share, drop them in the comments below!
What’s your favorite act of worship?
What are some ways you can implement some of these ideas in your day-to-day life?
I hope you have a wonderful rest of your day or night. Keep on loving others and seeking the Lord!
